The Art of Intuitive Eating
Our lives,
so seemingly small,
ripple out
to the whole universe
as tiny whispers
like the sounds
of butterfly wings,
and the clear voice
of the living truth.

Looking to the Future - Growing Our Own Food
Grow your own food We've been receiving intuitive nudges that we ought to learn how to become responsible for one of our most basic survival needs—food. As many of you know, we began to grow our own food in earnest last September, starting with an array of sprouts, which later included flats of wheatgrass and buckwheat lettuce. A small raised-bed garden seemed like the next logical step.

Our 2 x 12 foot growing space that was planted at the end of May/early June, was our first attempt to grow food outdoors since 1982. In the past, we put in gardens that were way too big, and had colossal failures! This year we thought start small, and if we're successful we can expand.

Some friends with green thumbs gave us a variety of organic veggie starts—tomatoes, broccoli, several varieties of lettuce, peas, Black-eyed Susans, chamomile, beets, basil, onions, and chard. To make the bed, Rex bought 2x12's from the lumber yard and eighteen bags of topsoil, for a cost of about fifty dollars.

The result is a hearty little garden thriving under our kitchen window, which is proudly displayed in the photos! The surprise is that we didn't think we could grow veggies! It's such a joy to go outside to water, pick a few of the outer leaves from the lettuces or spinach, and come inside with our fresh food to use in a salad, green smoothie, juice, or a wrap.

A Little Story: Biointensive Farming & Positive Change:

We are grateful to have local produce on the island that comes from our farmers market and Synergy Farm. Not only is the food organic—the owners, Peter and Susan Corning, actually "grow soil" by planting crops that are added to their many compost piles, which generate vital, living soil that is used in their vegetable beds.

They are dedicated advocates of biointensive farming, one of the most beneficial ways to grow food, because not only is the food nutrient rich, but the soil never becomes depleted, and is actually built up with an overall effect of healthier land with every passing year. Biointensive farming produces yields that average four times (or more) higher per acre than commercial agriculture!

Growing food Whenever we've planned a new project, after the initial conceptual stage, the most important factor for us is just to start—to begin—no matter how small our first step is. This takes us out of our heads and into the doing, and the process has a way of stimulating more growth, just like the tiny seed that roots in the earth. As soon as we begin, our intuition continues to suggest a succession of new ideas!

In the past, subjects like the above were interesting, but not compelling, and now these practices may be the very activities that ensure our ability to survive in the future—who would have ever thought? Rex and I are among the increasing thousands of people who decided to start a home garden this year. Apparently, this is an unprecedented event, since the Victory Gardens during World War II.

Even on this island where wilderness abounds, we interact on a daily basis with machines—cars, household gadgets, phones, computers—while gardening, being outside, growing sprouts and indoor greens, connects us to life cycles, and puts super quality food into our bodies!

Since we started to eat raw foods, the diet has created an exciting new lifestyle, and has been the driving force behind a groundswell of changes and improvements in every aspect of our lives.

About a week ago I was thinking about our future, what was coming into our lives, and inwardly heard the line from the movie, 2010—Something wonderful. Then a few days later, Rex told me that he'd heard the same line—Something wonderful is about to happen.

This is a beautiful phrase to contemplate—and instead of giving the negative energy more power to work with, it moves us into love, which carries us to a whole new paradigm.

Just start... make it happen!
